It was founded by San Giacinto Gaido and now faces the gulf on Seawall Blvd. This followed the 1900 Great Galveston Hurricane, which had killed over 6,000 souls. A seawall was soon commissioned to protect the low-lying land from future storms. Gaido’s opened in 1911, only nine years after the start of construction of the Galveston Seawall in 1902.

Started as a Grocery

In the beginning, Gaido’s was a small grocery store and deli. Gaido saw that there was a demand for fresh seafood in the area. He decided to transform his store into a seafood restaurant. Gaido’s is now rated among the greatest seafood restaurants in America.

Throughout the years, Gaido’s has undergone several renovations and expansions. Yet, the restaurant has always maintained its commitment to serving the freshest seafood possible. In 1956, the restaurant moved to its current location on Seawall Boulevard, where it continues to operate today.

In the 1960s, Gaido’s became famous for its lobster bisque, It was named the best bisque in America by Duncan Hines. The restaurant has also been recognized by other culinary experts over the years, including Zagat, which has rated it as one of the top seafood restaurants in America.

Keeping Family Control

In 1953, Sam Gaido, took over the restaurant and continued to expand and improve the business. In 1956, Gaido’s moved to its current location on Seawall Boulevard, which allowed for a larger dining space and more customers to be served.

Sam’s son, Nick Gaido, took over the restaurant in the 1970s. He continued the tradition of serving fresh seafood while also introducing new dishes to the menu. Under Nick’s leadership, Gaido’s became famous for its lobster bisque.

Today, Gaido’s is owned and operated by Nick’s daughter, Mary Gaido. She has continued the family legacy of serving the freshest seafood possible while also expanding the menu to include a wider variety of dishes. Gaido’s is also know for its steaks.
