Eduard Haas III founded Pez Candy in 1927 Vienna. It had a history of first coming in tins like today’s Altoids, but Pez later gained fame with its distinctive dispensers.
Since 1935, Pez Candy has remained a product of the Pez Candy Factory in Traun, Austria. Then, in the 1950s, Pez built another factory in Orange, Connecticut. While ownership of Pez has changed over the years, the majority owners are still the Haas family.
The original Pez tasted like peppermint, but many other flavors followed. Exotic flavors like Mango, Lychee, Vanilla cupcake, and Cotton candy are just a few. They are smaller than the size of the fingernail of your little finger. These peppermint and other lozenges came on the market as a substitute for smoking.
The Pez name stems for an abbreviation of the German for peppermint. The logo arranges the P – E – Z letters as if they are bricks turned sideways. Americans consume billions of Pez Candy pieces each year.
Post-War Introduction of Dispensers
By the end of the 1940s, Pez had introduced its now-famous re-fillable dispenser, which is about the size and shape of a modern plastic cigarette lighter. The dispenser has the distinction of dealing out candy one piece at a time, having a full load of twelve pieces. To get a single piece of Pez candy from a Pez dispenser, you will need to:
Hold the Pez dispenser upright.
Push down on the head of the dispenser. This engages a small lever, which will push a single piece of Pez candy out of the dispenser.
Pull the candy out of the dispenser.
The head of the dispenser tilts up in use, exposing each of the top candy pieces. It is the heads of the dispensers that made Pez famous. When Pez first came to America, the heads were fashioned after Disney characters such as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Through the years, the dispenser heads mimicked Star Wars themes, including R2-D2 and The Millennium Falcon, Popeye, and characters from The Simpsons.
