The Montgomery Biscuits are sopping up AA baseball history in Alabama. Now a farm club for the Tampa Bay Rays, the franchise began in 1973 Orlando, Florida, then the Orlando Twins. At that time, they were part of the Minnesota Twins organization. Over the next 24 seasons, they were owned by the Cubs and Mariners.
Last Stop?
Their last stop to date was in 1999, when Tampa Bay bought them. After being moved from Orlando to Montgomery, the surprise winner of a local naming contest was The Montgomery Biscuits. The name caught on and is quite popular these days across the league. A human-like buttermilk biscuit adorns their logo. They have even had Miss Gravy, Duchess of Pork, as a promotion.
Montgomery, Alabama had a rich history with minor league baseball. The city was home to a number of minor league teams in the early 1900s, including the Montgomery Senators, Montgomery Rebels, and Montgomery Grey Sox. The Senators were the most successful of these teams, winning the Southern League championship in 1910 and 1911.
The city’s minor league baseball history came to an end in 1955, when the Grey Sox folded. However, the city’s love of baseball never died, and in 2004, they got the Montgomery Biscuits.
Good Record and Great Promotion
The Biscuits have won four Southern League championships, most recently in 2018. The team plays its home games at Riverwalk Stadium, which was built in 2004. The stadium is located in downtown Montgomery and has a capacity of 7,000 fans. The Biscuits have a strong fan base, and they consistently rank among the top minor league teams in attendance.
The Biscuits have a long history of developing Major League players. Some of the notable players who have played for the Biscuits include:
B.J. Upton
Evan Longoria
David Price
Chris Archer
Jake Odorizzi
Willy Adames
Randy Arozarena
